What to do if my dog cries at night

Have you recently had a puppy at home or are thinking of adopting one? Then the first thing you should know is that puppies are separated from their mothers between the first 2 and 3 months of life, when they are weaned and when they start eating on their own. Although sometimes it is customary to separate them earlier, in the wrong way.

It is somewhat natural that in the first days of separation, both from its mother and perhaps from its siblings and father, the puppy will be restless, insecure, anxious, etc. This is usually reflected in long nights of crying, moaning, and barking that will not let you rest, because nobody likes to see their puppy like this. There should be a period of adaptation, usually a week or so, until he gets used to his new environment and is calmer at night. However, it is also true that a puppy may cry at night for a variety of reasons. It is essential to ascertain the cause in order to solve the problem that is making our puppy restless. In addition, it is equally important that from day one you begin to educate him and help him adapt.

To help you, in this article we will explain what to do if your puppy cries at night. Read on to know the possible reasons that can make your puppy cry at night and how you can help him.

Steps to follow:

1.

When you notice your little furry one not sleeping, complaining, crying and even barking, the first thing you should do is to make sure that it is not due to pain or health problems. If you believe that it may be due to health, you will have to take him to the vet and explain to him what is happening, so that the vet can guide you at that moment to alleviate his discomfort.

It could also be that his bed or crate is located in a place where he is very cold or hot, or that he hears a lot of noise. What you can do is to make sure that the temperature is suitable for your puppy, i.e., it is pleasant for you and even a little warmer, and try not to have too much noise coming from the street or neighbors. If there is too much noise for your puppy to rest, you can close the windows, offer him a crate instead of an open bed, or change the sleeping place.

While the previous reasons are usually the most common, there are other reasons a puppy may cry at night. These can be overeating, so you should give him his dinner an hour before bedtime and not too much. It can also be lack of exercise during the day, if he is not really tired and conserves a lot of energy, he will hardly sleep, so try to tire him enough before going to bed. He should start to get used to a daily routine that provides everything he needs, and he should know puppy care.

2.

Once you have covered the needs we mentioned and are sure that the puppy's crying and barking are not due to health problems, temperature, noise, too much food, or lack of exercise and routine, then you may think that it is simply the process of adjusting to his new life.

As we have already mentioned, he does not understand why he is suddenly no longer with his mother. So you must help him to understand that he is safe with us, take care of him with care and without missing anything on our part. This can only be achieved with patience, time and positive reinforcement. It usually takes at least a week for him to start getting comfortable and calm at night. Next, we will show you a few things you can do to get your puppy to stop crying in the process, making this process easier and quieter.

3.

It will be good to take the little one home for the first time in the morning, so he will have more hours to discover his new home and start to get used to it, which he will not be able to do if you take him home at night.

Something very important that you must comply with is not to comfort him every time he cries. If you do that, he will relate that if he cries he gets your attention right away, and from then on he will do it when he wants something from you. We know it is difficult, but it is better to let him cry a little to see that nothing bad or serious really happens to him. Also, you should not let him climb onto the couch or the bed to comfort you. If you do, then it will be harder for him to understand that he can't go up to these places when he wants to.

4.

Make sure that your bed or crib is suitable for him, is well located in the house, and that you have toys within reach for him to bite and entertain himself until he falls asleep.

You can leave him some of your t-shirt, as this will get him used to your smell and will also help him relax. Also, if you have the opportunity, it would be nice to wear some item with your mother's scent on it. An example of this could be a piece of the towel or blanket that your mother had on the bed in which she raised her puppies.

5.

Another technique you can do to keep your puppy from crying at night is to warm his bed before he goes to sleep. You can use a hair dryer or place a hot water bag under the blanket or bed, avoiding direct contact with the puppy so he doesn't get burned. This will comfort him, as until now he was used to sleeping with the warmth of his mother and brothers.

It is not very advisable to use an electric blanket, since great care must be taken to prevent the puppy from getting electrocuted or burned, it is best to use the hot water bottle covered with the blanket or a towel.

6.

It is advisable to place an analog clock next to his bed or crate. If you can, it is best to place it under your bed or blanket to hear it closer. As he hears the ticking of the clock, the puppy will associate it with his mother's heartbeat. This constant rhythm will help him to calm down and feel more comfortable.

7.

If even with everything the situation continues, nothing works and you still don't know what to do to get your puppy to stop crying at night, you can talk to your veterinarian to prescribe him some pheromone medication. They come in different formats such as diffusers, which you should place as close to the puppy's bed as possible, or there are also collars. They usually have an effect that lasts several weeks. This smell that we don't perceive will remind him of his mother and calm him down.
