Does every dog know how to swim?

Surely you've heard that every dog can swim. As if they already came to the world with a super swimming DNA. This is a subject that should be known to all parents of pets so that some kind of accident does not occur.

Does every dog know how to swim?

Myth! Although most are born with the ability to "row" if they enter the water, not every dog can swim. That's because this natural movement is not enough to keep them from drowning.

The true ability to swim is related to the physical aspects of the dog. Breeds such as Golden Retriever, Poodle, Cocker Spaniel, Labrador and, of course, water dogs, such as the Spanish and Portuguese Water Dogs, have characteristics that facilitate swimming. From the coat, musculature, muzzle size, even the selections made by humans to be good swimmers. This means that knowing the correct movement is not enough, it is necessary to have an adequate body structure.

Which races don't “know” how to swim?

On the other hand, some physical characteristics of other races disfavor the act of swimming. The Pug or the English Bulldog, for example, in addition to being brachycephalic, that is, with a short and flat snout, have short legs and arms, which makes it difficult – and a lot – to move. The more robust body does not help in this type of activity either, which is why it is so rare for dogs of this breed to swim.

The Dachshund and Basset Hound, on the other hand, have broad bodies and very short limbs. While the Bull Terrier has a very heavy head and therefore may have difficulty keeping it out of the water to breathe.

The Chow–Chow, on the other hand, has the perfect anatomy for swimming. However, its long and very dense coat makes it soaked and very heavy - not to mention that it is also brachycephalic...

Other Dog Breeds That Cannot Swim

French Bulldog(brachycephalic)

Pekingese (brachycephalic)

Boxer (brachycephalic)

American Staffordshire Terrier(head size and weight)

Shih Tzu (brachycephalic and with a long, dense coat)

avoid accidents

Now that you know that not all dogs can swim by nature, remember: never throw or push a dog in the pool, as actions like this can cause a very serious accident.

If your pet has any of these characteristics that make swimming difficult, there are life jackets for dogs that protect them from drowning. At Petlove's online petshop, we have the Outward Hound Nemo Ripstop Life Vest, which is comfortable, secure and even has top straps for the human parent to hold – and is shaped like the famous Nemo goldfish.
